Hiring a Website Developer in Johor: Eight Questions to Ask Before You Sign

3 September 20267 min readBy Jia Yun

A business website is one of the few purchases where the thing you are buying is invisible until it is finished. That makes it easy to compare quotes on price alone, and price alone is exactly the wrong axis.

We are a website developer based in Johor Bahru, and we have inherited enough half-finished and locked-down sites to know where these projects go wrong. Here are the questions that surface it early.

1. Who owns the website when it is done?

The most important question, and the one asked least.

You should get the source code, the hosting account, the domain registration and the documentation, all in your own name. If any of those stay with the developer, you are renting — and you will find out the day you want to move.

Ask directly: if I want to work with someone else next year, what do I take with me? The answer should be "everything".

2. Is my content going to be real text?

A surprising number of SME sites in Malaysia put their menu, price list or product catalogue on the page as image files. It looks fine. It is also invisible to Google, unreadable by a screen reader, unsearchable, and impossible to update without going back to a designer.

When we rebuilt the DEN group site, this was the main structural change: the omakase menus and the mini don series went from images to real text, so guests and search engines could both read them.

3. How fast will it be on a phone, on mobile data?

Not on your designer’s laptop on office wifi. Most of your visitors will arrive on a phone, sometimes on a weak connection, and they will leave before a heavy site finishes loading.

Ask what the site is expected to score on Core Web Vitals, and ask to see a live site the developer has built, tested on your own phone.

4. Can I edit it myself?

Decide honestly whether you will. Some owners want to change a price or add a promotion themselves; others will never log in and would rather WhatsApp someone. Both are fine — but they lead to different builds, and it is cheaper to decide now.

5. What happens to enquiries?

A form that emails an address nobody checks is not lead generation. Ask where enquiries go, whether they also reach WhatsApp, and whether anything records that they arrived.

6. Will it be found for the things people actually search?

A site that does not mention what you do, where you do it, and in the words your customers use, will not be found for those words. That is not an SEO add-on, it is a content decision made during the build.

Technical groundwork — clean structure, fast pages, schema markup so search engines and AI assistants can tell what the business is — should be in the build. Ongoing content and local SEO is separate, continuing work, and anyone bundling "SEO" into a one-off website price should be asked what specifically that covers.

7. What is the support arrangement after launch?

Websites need patching. Frameworks get security updates, integrations change, certificates expire. Ask what is included, what is charged, and how you reach someone — for us that is WhatsApp rather than a ticket queue, because an SME owner with a broken checkout at 9pm needs a person.

8. Is there a grant that covers part of this?

The MSME Digital Grant MADANI is a 50% matching subsidy up to RM 5,000 for approved digital solutions, administered by BSN and disbursed through MDEC-registered providers. Not every IT company is registered, and the grant only applies if yours is.

We are not an MDEC-registered grant disburser and we do not submit applications on your behalf — but we will tell you when a grant is worth pursuing and help you scope the work before you approach the official channel. Confirm current terms at the official BSN or MDEC portal.

A note on working outside Johor Bahru

We are in JB and work with clients across Malaysia and Singapore. Discovery, weekly reviews and support all run over calls and WhatsApp. If a developer tells you proximity is essential, ask what specifically requires it.
